Mamma Bird…
On returning home to St. Croix, from a Puerto Rico vacation, we found one of the Lovebirds dead and the other on the verge of dying. Before this tragedy, the pair were taking turns feeding six little fledglings that hatched three week before we left for Puerto Rico. The three little ones that survived were in really bad shape. We removed the three from the nest (there was a birdhouse in the cage) and we began to hand feed them a baby bird food formula (hmmm). I should say, Mary really was the one that hand fed them; I only found the food… it just happen spot the last can of baby bird food at one of the animal feed shop on the island. Mary was amazing; she fed these birds before she would go to work and when she returned home, everyday and all day on weekends. This went on for about two weeks. Just as I was getting a little impatient with all of this, the surviving bird, I call Mama Bird, decided she/he was ready to take over again. This short film captures that moment when the parent bird took back the job of feeding its young. It was very interesting seeing Mary feed the birds, but when the Mama Bird jump back into the picture it became more interesting seeing the two, Mary and the Mamma Bird feeding the together. I have read and heard stories about birds abandoning the nest when they smell humans on the chicks. Well, this film is the myth buster for sure. Enjoy… Stan
